Five gyms and pools in Rovaniemi, Levi and Saariselkä, from resort spa fitness to the city swimming hall. Plus outdoor arctic training methods.
From resort spa gyms to the world's finest outdoor training environment, Finnish Lapland offers a fitness experience that no indoor facility can fully replicate.
Real gyms, pools and training spots across the main Lapland destinations.
The gym of the Levi Hotel Spa complex. Levi Wellness Club runs group classes from yoga to circuit training and opens daily on an access key, and Water World's seventeen indoor and outdoor pools with three saunas wait on the spa side. Day tickets available.
Finland's official Olympic Training Centre on Ounasvaara, two kilometres from the city centre. The pool section holds a 25-metre pool plus five smaller ones, and the campus adds gyms, a climbing wall, sports halls and a bowling alley.
Rovaniemi's municipal swimming hall near the centre: proper lap swimming at municipal prices, with the Nautilus gym running upstairs as its own club. This is where local swimmers actually train, and the mornings start early.
The fell centre at the foot of Kiilopää, a short drive from Saariselkä village. The gym itself is compact; the point is the recovery: the Kuurakaltio smoke sauna, an ice-cold dip in the Kiilopuro stream, and marked fell trails from the front door.
A compact 24/7 gym in the Arctic Light boutique hotel in central Rovaniemi: treadmill, exercise bike, dumbbells and mats, opened with the room key. Hotel guests only, but if you stay downtown it removes every excuse.
The most powerful fitness experiences in Lapland happen outside any building. The arctic environment is itself a training facility of extraordinary scale.
Running, strength training, and yoga in sub-zero temperatures, the cold adds an entirely new dimension to conventional training protocols.
Cross-country skiing is the world's most complete cardiovascular workout. Lapland's 3,000+ km of maintained ski trails are open from November to April.
Alternating sauna heat and ice swimming cold creates cardiovascular stress comparable to moderate exercise, a recovery tool that also conditions the body.
Fell hiking in winter snowshoes provides full-body resistance training in the most scenic possible environment. Ascents of Lapland's fells offer views to 60+ kilometres.
